First of all, a transmitter coil placed under the detector head will act as an electromagnet and create a magnetic field. So when you move around with your gold detector, this magnetic field will encounter the gold in the ground. The gold, in contact with the magnetic field, will in turn send a message via a magnetic field. The receiving coil will pick up this response and then trigger an audible signal to signal the presence of an object.

 

How does a gold detector work: which gold detector for which need?

A gold detector is not suitable for every situation. In fact, you have to adapt it to the object you are looking for. Are you aiming for small treasures such as gold nuggets and jewels? Or are you thinking big and want to get your hands on gold bars?

So, if you are looking for gold nuggets no deeper than 1 m, you should go for a high frequency detector. Conversely, low frequency detectors will be used more for metal detectors. High frequency devices are therefore particularly designed for gold nugget hunters.

On the other hand, if you are looking for larger gold treasures, these are likely buried deeper in the ground. They therefore require a more efficient device that can probe the ground in depth.
